Dayton Flyers Basketball: A Look Back at Our Sponsorship

Dayton Flyers basketball has long been part of the energy of the Miami Valley, and for a stretch of years Thrush & Son® was part of the game-night experience at UD Arena, including in-arena visibility and Dunk Cam moments.

Editorial update

Our Dayton Flyers basketball sponsorship has concluded, and Thrush & Son® no longer maintains a sponsorship or partnership with the program. This post is preserved as part of our company history and does not reflect a current relationship.

Below, you’ll find the archive, where our community focus is today, and a basketball-style game plan for keeping water off your roof and away from your foundation.

What Our Dayton Flyers Sponsorship Looked Like

During the sponsorship years, our name appeared inside UD Arena and on Dunk Cam moments that brought fans into the action. Game nights drew families from across Montgomery, Greene, Miami, and Warren counties, the same communities we serve every day.

For many longtime customers, those Dayton Flyers game nights were the first place they saw the Thrush & Son name. We’re glad the archive is here for anyone who remembers it.

Chapters like this one come and go for any business. This one has closed, and we’ve kept the record here as part of our history rather than quietly deleting it.

Our company’s story goes back to 1960, long before any arena banner. You can read more of it in who we are.

Where Our Community Support Goes Now

Our sponsorship of Dayton Flyers basketball has ended, but our community focus hasn’t. Today it centers on the towns where our offices sit and the families we serve: local schools, teams, veterans, and holiday giving. See our minor league baseball night, the Reds Caravan archive, and our holiday toy drive.

When we look at community partners now, we look close to home: organizations in the towns where our offices sit, programs that reach kids and families directly, and causes our crew can show up for in person. Smaller stages, maybe, but the kind of support you can see on the sidelines and in the neighborhood.

Four Lessons From the Court for Your Home

Our Dayton Flyers sponsorship years left us with a few ideas that still shape how we approach a roof. None of them require a ticket.

01

Fundamentals win

Flashy features don’t matter if the basics fail. Proper flashing, drip edge, ventilation, and fastening are the layups of roofing.

02

Prepare before tip-off

The best time to fix drainage is before the first freeze. A fall inspection finds clogged gutters and loose shingles while they’re still easy fixes.

03

Every position matters

A great roof with undersized downspouts still floods the basement. The system only works when every part does its job.

Photos from each inspection let us compare season to season and spot small changes before they become big ones.

Game plan

Run the Drainage Play: Five Positions on Your House

The original Dayton Flyers post talked about preparation and execution under pressure. Your roof and gutters face that pressure every storm. Water should move off the roof like a clean fast break: quick, organized, and away from the house. Tap a player on the court to see each position’s assignment, sourced from the Building America Solution Center.

Assignment 1 of 5

Point guard: the roof

Every play starts up top. Shingles and underlayment shed water downhill and hand it off to the edge. See how the layers work in parts of a roof.

Assignment 2 of 5

Shooting guard: drip edge

Metal drip edge guides water off the shingles and into the gutter instead of behind it, protecting the fascia and roof deck.

Assignment 3 of 5

Small forward: the gutter

Gutters should slope at least 1/16 inch per foot toward the downspouts, so water keeps moving instead of pooling.

Assignment 4 of 5

Power forward: the downspout

Size matters: about 1 square inch of downspout opening for every 100 square feet of roof, with downspouts 20 to 50 feet apart.

Assignment 5 of 5

Center: grade and extension

The finish at the rim. Downspouts should end at least 5 feet from the foundation, on ground that slopes away from the house.

When the play breaks down, water soaks the soil next to the foundation and can wick into the basement. Want to slow the water down even more? The EPA’s Soak Up the Rain program covers rain barrels and rain gardens. Read more in roofing components and maintaining your gutters.

The Freeze-Thaw Season Checklist

Ohio’s freeze-thaw swings test every part of the drainage play. Water that sits in a clogged gutter or a low spot freezes, expands, thaws, and does it again, sometimes in the same week. Each cycle pries at seams, hangers, and shingle edges. Check off each task as you finish it and watch the clock.

Post-game questions

Dayton Flyers Sponsorship: Your Questions, Answered

Does Thrush & Son still sponsor Dayton Flyers basketball?

No. Our Dayton Flyers basketball sponsorship has concluded. This post is kept as part of our company history and does not reflect a current partnership.

Why keep the Dayton Flyers post on your site?

It documents a chapter of our community involvement. We’ve updated it so readers know the sponsorship has ended, and added practical home advice that’s useful any season.

What local causes does Thrush & Son support today?

We support Miami Valley schools, teams, veterans, and holiday giving, including the Troy Trojans and Brookville Blue Devils. Read about minor league baseball, the Reds Caravan, and our holiday toy drive.

Can I still see photos from the Dayton Flyers sponsorship?

Yes. The sponsorship graphic and a Dunk Cam photo from UD Arena are preserved in the archive section of this page.

Where can I find Dayton Flyers schedules and tickets?

For schedules, tickets, and team news, visit the official University of Dayton Athletics website, daytonflyers.com.

How far should downspouts carry water from my house?

At least 5 feet from the foundation, according to the Building America Solution Center, onto ground that slopes away from the house.

How do I know if my gutters are big enough?

A common rule is about 1 square inch of downspout opening for every 100 square feet of roof, with downspouts spaced 20 to 50 feet apart. We size gutters to the roof during every estimate.

What causes gutters to pull away in winter?

Ice. When an ice dam forms at the roof edge, its weight loads the hangers. Fixing attic heat loss stops the cycle; see the real reason ice dams form.

Do you install seamless gutters and guards?

Yes. See our gutter services and gutter protection systems.
