The engineering you never see
Two roofs can look identical from the street and perform nothing alike. The difference is product technology: how the shingle bonds and seals, what keeps algae from taking hold, how the glass in a window keeps its seal for decades. This hub collects the product technology behind the roofing and windows we install, in plain English.

How the roof and window got smarter
Every few years, a manufacturer solves a problem homeowners used to live with. Here’s how far it has come.
- Yesterday
Three-tab shingles
One flat layer, a narrow nail line and no real defense against algae. Wind found the weak spots fast.
- Next
Laminated shingles
Two layers for depth and strength, but the seam between them was still a small target for every nail.
- 2020
LayerLock and the StrikeZone
GAF fused the layers and widened the nailing area on Timberline HDZ, then added WindProven coverage.
- 2022
StainGuard Plus on HDZ
Time-release algae protection became standard on Timberline HDZ, backed by a 25-year algae warranty.
- Windows
Metal to warm-edge
Aluminum spacers gave way to Endur’s stainless steel, and today to the one-piece TPS spacer in our Nobility windows.
Four questions before we install anything new
Not every new feature earns a spot on our trucks. Before we recommend a new feature to a Miami Valley homeowner, it has to pass the same four questions we have asked for three generations.
- Is it tested? Published lab results or recognized standards, not just a brochure claim.
- Is it in writing? A warranty that names the product and spells out what is covered.
- Does it fit Ohio? Freeze-thaw winters, humid summers and spring wind.
- Can we install it right? Our crews trained on it, with the matching components on hand.
The brands behind the product technology
We install products from manufacturers that publish their testing and stand behind it in writing.
GAF
Timberline shingles with LayerLock, Dura Grip, StainGuard Plus and Advanced Protection, installed as a complete GAF system with matched accessories. Matched components are what qualify a roof for the strongest GAF warranties. See our GAF shingle collection.
Nobility
Fusion-welded vinyl replacement windows with TPS warm-edge spacers and ENERGY STAR ratings, in Diamond and Platinum collections. We measure every opening and seal each frame into the wall.
CertainTeed
Insulated, lap, shake and stone siding, plus soffit and trim, from CertainTeed. Every brochure and warranty is in our product literature library.
Product technology, answered
Short answers before you dig into the articles below.
What is product technology?
Product technology is the engineering built into the materials on your home: how a shingle bonds and seals, how glass keeps its seal, how a surface fights algae. It is the difference between two products that look the same on the truck.
Which product technology matters most for an Ohio roof?
Wind and water. LayerLock, Dura Grip and Advanced Protection keep shingles down, and roof underlayment and leak barrier keep water out when something gets past them. StainGuard Plus keeps the roof looking new on shady, humid lots.
Do I pay extra for this technology?
Most of it is built into the GAF Timberline shingles and Nobility windows we install. Your written estimate lists exactly which products and features are included.
Is newer always better?
Not automatically. Windows we installed with Endur glass around 2014 were built to keep their seal for decades. Newer designs like TPS improve on them, but a good older system does not need replacing just because something newer exists.
How does product technology affect my warranty?
Often directly. Some coverage only applies when specific product technology is installed as a system, such as WindProven, which requires Timberline shingles with LayerLock plus four qualifying GAF accessories. We register the right coverage for your project.
Where can I read the manufacturer documents?
Every brochure and warranty is in our product literature library, including the GAF and CertainTeed libraries and the Nobility windows documents.
