Most of the Miami Valley falls in ENERGY STAR’s Northern zone, where solar heat gain has a minimum. A band of counties along the Ohio River falls in North-Central, where the same number becomes a maximum. One rule flips, and so does the right glass.
ENERGY STAR 7.0 Windows: One State, Two Zones
Winters are cold across all of Ohio, but cooling demand and summer sun load climb as you head toward the river. ENERGY STAR 7.0 windows are certified against two numbers, and the zone decides how each one is judged.
U-factor measures how fast heat escapes through the window. Lower is better, everywhere, always. It decides whether you feel a cold wall of air on the couch next to the window in January.
SHGC, the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, measures how much of the sun’s heat comes through the glass. This is the number that flips. In the Northern zone, free winter sun is an asset, so ENERGY STAR sets a floor. Farther south, that sun becomes an air-conditioning bill, so it sets a ceiling. Put low-gain southern glass on a south-facing Dayton kitchen and you give away free heat every sunny afternoon from November to March.

Lifetime means as long as the original purchaser owns and occupies the residence. Insulated glass carries 20 years after transfer.
