ENERGY STAR 7.0 windows made one thing clear for Ohio homeowners: the right window in Brookville is not automatically the right window in Mason. Same state, same manufacturer — different glass. The reason is stamped on the federal map.

What Those Two Numbers Actually Mean

U-Factor measures how fast heat escapes. Lower is better, everywhere, always. It decides whether you feel a cold wall of air sitting near the window in January.

SHGC — Solar Heat Gain Coefficient — measures how much of the sun’s heat comes through. This is the one that flips. Up north, free winter sun is an asset ENERGY STAR wants you to capture, so it sets a floor. Down south, that same sun is an air conditioning bill, so it sets a cap. Put high-gain northern glass in a west-facing Cincinnati family room and you have bought a very efficient greenhouse.

Every insulated glass unit lives or dies at its edge.
