See It, Touch It, Then Choose It.
A home improvement showroom does something no catalog can: it puts the real shingle, panel, window, and door in your hands before you commit to living with it for decades. When Thrush & Son® opened its design space on Troy’s Public Square in late 2016, that was the whole idea.
This guide walks through what a home improvement showroom visit should look like, the lighting trick that fools almost everyone, and what to bring so one visit does the work of five.

Walk the Home Improvement Showroom Room by Room
Every good home improvement showroom is laid out like a small museum: one wall for each part of the house, and a table where it all comes together. Tap a room on the floor plan to see what to touch, compare, and ask about on your next home improvement showroom visit.
Shingle boards show how a color reads across a whole slope, not just one tab.
- Run your hand over dimensional shingles and compare thickness
- Hold two colors side by side at arm’s length, then across the room
- Ask how ridge caps and starter strips match the field shingles
Browse top shingle colors before you visit.
Full-length panels reveal texture, shadow lines, and how trim frames them.
- Compare panel profiles: lap, Dutch lap, and board and batten
- Press on insulated and standard panels to feel the difference
- Pair siding with trim and soffit colors, not just alone
Start with our guide to siding colors.
Working samples show how a window opens, locks, and seals.
- Open and close double-hung, casement, and slider styles
- Check how easy the locks and tilt latches are
- Look at grid patterns against the glass from a few steps back
See the options in window styles.
Doors are the handshake of a house, so feel the weight before you choose.
- Swing a fiberglass and a steel door and listen to the close
- Compare glass inserts for light versus privacy
- Try the hardware your family will use every day
Compare materials in our door guide.
Cutaway sections show size, gauge, and how guards attach.
- Compare standard and oversized gutter profiles
- See how a guard sits under the shingle edge
- Match gutter color to trim, not just to siding
Read about gutter protection systems.
Where samples come together with a photo of your own house.
- Lay roof, siding, and trim samples together in one hand
- Take photos of combinations in window light
- Ask for samples to take home and view outside
Try combinations online in our Home Exterior Design Center.
Why the Showroom Color Changes Outside
Here’s the trick that surprises almost everyone. A color that looks right under showroom lights can read very differently on your house. LP Building Solutions says exterior colors “always appear lighter” outdoors and suggests choosing about two shades darker than you want, per its exterior color guide.
Even indoor light: the color you picked off the wall.
Direct sun washes color out. It reads noticeably lighter.
In shade, the same color turns deeper and cooler.
Warm evening light shifts everything toward amber.
The fix is simple: use the home improvement showroom to narrow your choices to two or three, then take samples home. Look at them in morning and evening light, in sun and in shade, on more than one side of the house.
Where a Home Improvement Showroom Fits in Your Search
A home improvement showroom earns its keep as the middle step, not the first or the last. Here’s the viewing order we suggest to homeowners who want to choose once and be glad for decades.
- Stop 1
Browse from the couch
Collect ideas online and try combinations on a house like yours in our Home Exterior Design Center. Save the three looks you keep coming back to.
- Stop 2
Visit the showroom
Touch the real products, compare grades and profiles, and ask every question on your list. Narrow each category to two or three finalists.
- Stop 3
Drive and look up
Find your finalists on real houses nearby. Full-size installations show how a color behaves across a whole roof or wall.
- Stop 4
Test at home
Hold samples against your own brick, trim, and door, in morning and evening light. This is where the final choice usually makes itself.
Pack for Your Home Improvement Showroom Visit
A home improvement showroom visit goes twice as far when you walk in prepared. GAF suggests getting samples, checking any association rules, and driving through neighborhoods to see colors on real houses, per its color tips.
Bring the five things on this ticket and you’ll leave with a short list instead of a headache. Staff can pull matching samples faster when they can see your house. And don’t try to decide everything in one trip. The right choices usually come on the second look.
Admit one prepared homeowner
- Photos of your house from the street, all four sides
- Your HOA’s color or material rules, if any
- The colors you’re keeping: brick, stone, or a front door you like
- A rough budget range and your must-haves
- Questions you’ve been saving up
What a Photo Can’t Tell You
Look closely at a dimensional shingle and you’ll see layers, shadow lines, and color blends that flatten out in a brochure. The same goes for siding grain, window hardware, and the weight of a door. Those details decide whether a house looks crafted or cookie-cutter, and a home improvement showroom is where you catch them.
It also helps to compare grades side by side. Two shingles can share a color name and still look different because of thickness and shadow lines. Two siding panels in the same shade can differ in texture, panel width, and stiffness. In a showroom, those differences are obvious in seconds.
That’s also why we keep sending homeowners to look at real houses. Our project gallery shows finished homes from across the Miami Valley, so you can see how a product looks at full scale.

A New Home Improvement Showroom in Troy
In this 2016 video, Corey Thrush introduces the Troy home improvement showroom and explains why it was built: homeowners deserve more than a sales presentation. They deserve to see, touch, and understand the products that will protect their homes.

Home Improvement Showroom FAQs
01Why visit a home improvement showroom instead of shopping online?
Photos can’t show texture, weight, or how a color shifts in different light. A home improvement showroom lets you touch the product, compare options side by side, and ask questions on the spot.
02How should I compare colors at a showroom?
Use the showroom to narrow the field, then view your top two or three samples outside at home. LP recommends checking exterior colors in daylight, in sun and shade, and on different sides of the house, per its color guide.
03Why do colors look different on my house?
Exterior light is stronger and changes through the day. Most colors read lighter in full sun and darker in shade, which is why a small chip rarely matches the finished wall.
04What should I bring to a showroom visit?
Photos of every side of your house, any HOA rules, the colors you’re keeping, a rough budget, and your list of questions.
05When did Thrush & Son open in Troy?
The Troy office and design space opened on Public Square in late 2016 and early 2017, as reported by the Troy Tribune. Read the full story in family-owned.
06Can I compare options without leaving home?
Yes. Our Home Exterior Design Center lets you try roofing, siding, and trim on a home like yours online, and we can bring samples to your estimate.
