Two Layers Thick. Twice the Character.
Architectural shingles are the roof most Miami Valley homeowners choose today, and for good reason. Also called laminated or dimensional shingles, they bond two or more layers of asphalt-coated fiberglass into one thicker shingle that adds depth, strength, and stronger warranty options than the flat 3-tab roofs of a generation ago.
This guide lets you see the difference on a roof, takes one apart layer by layer, explains what the wind ratings mean, and helps you decide whether an upgrade makes sense for your home.

Architectural Shingles vs. 3-Tab vs. Designer
There are three main families of asphalt shingles. The quickest way to understand them is to see each one on the same house. Pick a type and watch the roof change.
From the street, the difference comes down to shadows. A 3-tab roof has straight, even lines. Laminated shingles break those lines up, so the roof catches light the way natural wood or slate would. Designer lines push that effect further with deeper cuts and thicker profiles.
3-tab: One layer, cut into identical tabs. Clean and economical, but the roof reads flat from the street.
Architectural: Two or more laminated layers create random shadow lines and depth that suggest wood shake from the curb.
Designer: Thicker, specialty profiles shaped to mimic slate or hand-split shake for the most dramatic roofline.
Inside Architectural Shingles
Take one apart and you’ll find six working parts. Each one has a job, and together they explain why these shingles outlast and outperform a single-layer 3-tab.
- 01
Granule surface
Ceramic-coated mineral granules shield the asphalt from UV and give the shingle its color blend.
- 02
Top tab layer
The cut, staggered layer that creates the shadow lines and dimensional look.
- 03
Laminated bond
The two layers are bonded together, which is where the name laminated shingles comes from.
- 04
Common bond nailing zone
On Timberline HDZ, the StrikeZone nailing area lets nails catch both layers for a stronger hold.
- 05
Base layer
A full-width asphalt-coated fiberglass mat that adds thickness and backs every tab.
- 06
Factory sealant
Strips that heat-activate in the sun and glue each course to the one below.
What Architectural Shingles’ Wind Ratings Mean
Wind ratings come from standardized lab tests. GAF lists Timberline HDZ at ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H, the top class in each test, per its spec sheet.
The bigger story is the warranty. Install Timberline shingles with LayerLock Technology plus four required GAF accessories (starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge caps, and a leak barrier or attic ventilation) and the roof qualifies for the WindProven limited wind warranty, which has no maximum wind speed. Hail isn’t covered under that warranty.

Architectural Shingles Scorecard
Here’s how the three families compare, using GAF’s published specs for its Royal Sovereign 3-tab and Timberline HDZ architectural lines.
| 3-tab | Architectural | Designer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Layers | 1 | 2+ | 2+ (thicker) |
| Look from the street | Flat, uniform | Dimensional | Slate or shake style |
| Algae protection (GAF) | 10-yr StainGuard on Royal Sovereign | 25-yr StainGuard Plus on Timberline HDZ | Varies by line |
| Wind testing (HDZ) | Varies | ASTM D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H | Varies by line |
| Enhanced wind warranty | Not eligible | WindProven, no max wind speed* | Varies by line |
| Price | $ | $$ | $$$ |
A word on “lifetime.” GAF’s lifetime limited warranty on Timberline HDZ covers manufacturing defects for as long as the original owners, or an eligible second owner, own a single-family home. It’s strong coverage, but it isn’t a promise the roof lasts forever, and it doesn’t cover installation errors on its own.
That’s why the contractor matters. Certified installers can offer enhanced system warranties that add coverage for workmanship. Ask what’s included, in writing, before you sign. Our warranty guide explains the difference.

Four Installation Details to Ask About
A shingle’s ratings assume it was installed the way the manufacturer intended. These are the details we watch on every roof, and the ones worth asking any contractor about.
- 01
Nails in the right zone
Nails belong in the marked nailing area so they catch both layers. High or crooked nails are a common reason shingles lift in storms.
- 02
Starter strips at every edge
Factory starter strips put sealant right where wind attacks first: the eaves and rakes. Cut-up shingles don’t seal the same way.
- 03
Balanced ventilation
An attic that can’t breathe cooks shingles from below. Intake and exhaust need to be in balance. See parts of a roof.
- 04
Weather-aware scheduling
Sealant strips need warmth and sun to bond. In cold weather, crews handle shingles carefully and hand-seal when needed.
Is It Time for Architectural Shingles?
If your current roof is 3-tab, moving to architectural shingles is the most common upgrade we install. If you already have a dimensional roof, replacement is a chance to refresh the color or step up to a better line.
Timing matters too. Replacing a roof before it fails means you choose the color, the line, and the schedule, instead of making those choices in a hurry after a leak. Most homeowners we meet are glad they planned ahead rather than waiting for water in the attic.
Answer the four questions on the right. If you nod at two or more, architectural shingles are almost certainly the right call. For a broader comparison, see choose a shingle and roofing materials.
?Do you have 3-tab shingles now?Yes
Upgrading is the most common move we see, and the new roof usually looks like a different house from the curb.
?Do you plan to stay 5+ years?Yes
You’ll get the most from the longer warranties and algae protection.
?Do you see black streaks on roofs nearby?Yes
Algae is common in humid Ohio summers. Look for StainGuard Plus protection.
?Is your home in an open, windy spot?Yes
Ask for a complete system that qualifies for an enhanced wind warranty.

The Shingle Is Only Half the Roof
Even the strongest shingle depends on installation: nail placement, starter strips, ventilation, and flashing. As a GAF President’s Club Contractor, Thrush & Son can register enhanced GAF warranties, and we’ve installed roofs across the Miami Valley since 1960. Read homeowner reviews, check our BBB profile, and understand the warranty.
Every roof we install starts with a full tear-off, so we can see the deck, replace soft boards, and build the system from the wood up. It takes a little longer than a layover, and it’s the only way we know to stand behind the work for decades.
Architectural Shingles FAQs
What are architectural shingles?
Architectural shingles, also called laminated or dimensional shingles, are asphalt shingles made from two or more bonded layers. The layers create depth and shadow lines that a single-layer 3-tab shingle can’t.
Are architectural shingles worth it over 3-tab?
For most homes, yes. Laminated shingles look richer, and premium lines like GAF Timberline HDZ carry a lifetime limited warranty and a 25-year StainGuard Plus algae warranty, compared with 10 years of StainGuard on GAF’s Royal Sovereign 3-tab, per GAF.
How wind resistant are architectural shingles?
Timberline HDZ is rated ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H. Installed with four required GAF accessories, it qualifies for the WindProven limited wind warranty, which has no maximum wind speed.
Can architectural shingles go over my old roof?
We recommend a full tear-off so the deck can be inspected and every layer of the system installed correctly. See parts of a roof for why each layer matters.
Do architectural shingles come in many colors?
Yes, dozens. Browse top shingle colors or try them on a home like yours in our Home Exterior Design Center.
What does a lifetime limited warranty cover?
On Timberline HDZ, it covers manufacturing defects for as long as the original owners, or an eligible second owner, own a single-family home, per the GAF spec sheet. Installation errors need separate workmanship coverage.
