GAF Storm-Rated Shingles: Built for Real Weather

Not marketing claims. Lab tests, wind standards, and warranty terms you can check yourself.

GAF storm-rated shingles have become the benchmark for homeowners who refuse to gamble with their roof. In the Miami Valley, hail, wind, snow, and heavy rain all take their turn, and a roof has to do more than look good. It has to perform under pressure.

This guide skips the sales pitch. Below are seven pieces of real-world proof, each tied to an independent test standard or a written warranty term, that show why GAF storm-rated shingles hold up when storms hit, and what that means for long-term value, insurance, and peace of mind.

What Class 4 Actually Means

The most-quoted rating in roofing, explained by the test behind GAF storm-rated shingles.

UL 2218 is the impact standard insurers and building officials rely on. Lab technicians drop steel balls onto installed shingles, and Class 4 is the toughest tier: a 2-inch ball dropped from 20 feet, twice, onto the same spot. One crack or rupture and the shingle fails. Class 3 uses a 1.75-inch ball from 17 feet.

GAF storm-rated shingles like Timberline AS II pass Class 4 because of SBS-modified asphalt, a rubberized blend that flexes on impact and lies flatter in cold weather.

Independent tests, written terms

7 Pieces of Proof GAF Storm-Rated Shingles Deliver

Each one is tied to a test standard or warranty you can verify.

Proof 01 · ImpactClass 4UL 2218Passed

Hail is one of the leading causes of early roof failure. GAF storm-rated shingles like Timberline® AS II and Grand Sequoia® AS pass the UL 2218 Class 4 impact test, the highest rating available. The test drops a 2-inch steel ball from 20 feet onto the same spot twice. To pass, the shingle can show no cracks or ruptures.

SBS polymer-modified asphalt gives the shingle a rubber-like flex, so it absorbs the hit instead of fracturing.

Proof 02 · Real hailRated GoodIBHS lab hailPassed

Steel balls aren’t hail. That’s why the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety fires lab-made hailstones at shingles bought off store shelves, then scores dents, tears, and granule loss. Its 2025 ratings covered 24 impact-resistant products, roughly 95% of the market, and not one earned “Excellent.” Timberline AS II is rated Good, and IBHS says Marginal or Poor products shouldn’t be used in hail-prone areas.

A Good rating also helps a roof meet the FORTIFIED Roof™ shingle requirement.

Proof 03 · Wind upliftClass F + HASTM D3161 / D7158Passed

Wind uplift is the silent roof killer. GAF storm-rated shingles carry ASTM D3161 Class F, tested at 110 mph, and ASTM D7158 Class H, rated for 150 mph winds. Those are the two wind standards building codes reference, and these shingles hold the top class of each.

Dura Grip™ adhesive seals each shingle to the one below, so wind can’t get a fingerhold.

Proof 04 · Wind warrantyNo speed limitWindProven™Passed

Here’s the proof GAF puts in writing. Timberline shingles with LayerLock® Technology qualify for the WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty, a 15-year wind warranty with no maximum wind speed and no named-storm exclusion. It applies when four GAF accessories are installed: starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap shingles, and either leak barrier or attic ventilation.

No extra cost and no registration required, which is why we install the full system every time.

Proof 05 · Installation99.9%Nailing accuracyPassed

A storm-rated shingle only performs if the nails land in the right place. LayerLock® Technology mechanically fuses the shingle layers and adds the wide StrikeZone® nailing area. In controlled testing by Home Innovation Research Labs, it delivered up to 99.9% nailing accuracy.

Fewer misplaced nails means fewer weak points when gusts hit the roof.

Proof 06 · Fire & algaeClass A+ 25-yr algaePassed

Storm protection isn’t only about wind and hail. GAF storm-rated shingles like Timberline AS II carry a UL Class A fire rating, the highest there is, and StainGuard Plus™ products carry a 25-year limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration, so the roof keeps its curb appeal through humid Ohio summers.

Look for the StainGuard Plus™ logo on the bundle; that’s what activates the algae warranty.

Proof 07 · WarrantyLifetimeLimited warrantyPassed

GAF Lifetime shingles carry a Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects for the original owners of a single-family home. Installed as a complete system by a certified contractor, they unlock enhanced coverage like the GAF Lifetime Roofing System and the Golden Pledge® warranty. Timberline AS II also carries the Good Housekeeping Seal.

Honest fine print: GAF does not warrant shingles against hail damage. Class 4 shingles are about reducing damage, not guaranteeing zero damage.

Class 4 and Your Insurance: The Honest Version

Class 3 and Class 4 shingles may qualify for a homeowners insurance discount, but discounts aren’t guaranteed and vary by state and insurer. Some insurers also require a cosmetic damage endorsement that limits coverage for dents and scuffs that don’t cause leaks. Call your agent before you choose a roof, and ask both questions: is there a discount, and is there a cosmetic waiver?

A FORTIFIED Roof™, a standard developed by IBHS, can qualify for incentives in some areas too. GAF storm-rated shingles rated Good by IBHS, like Timberline AS II, help a roof meet the FORTIFIED shingle requirement.

Roofs are systems

How GAF Storm-Rated Shingles Protect the Entire Home

Today’s roofs are systems, not just shingles. GAF storm-rated shingles work with matching starter strips, roof deck protection, leak barrier, ridge caps, and balanced ventilation. That full system is what earns the strongest warranties and what keeps water out when wind-driven rain finds every seam.

Heat loss, moisture, and energy efficiency tie into roof performance too. For a look at how thermal performance shapes the rest of your exterior, read our breakdown of R-Value vs. U-Factor in modern windows. And for the full storm checklist, see our guide to storm-proofing your home.
