A Happy Thanksgiving Toast From Three Generations of Thrushes

Pull up a chair. There’s a seat with your name on it.
Happy Thanksgiving message from Thrush & Son featuring pumpkins, autumn leaves, pinecones, and the Thrush and Son logo celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday

Happy Thanksgiving from the whole Thrush & Son® family. Every November, our house fills up the same way yours probably does: extra chairs from the basement, a card table pushed against the dining table, and a kitchen that hasn’t been that warm since last year.

It’s the one day the house itself feels like a guest of honor. The roof keeps the rain off the gravy, the windows hold in the warmth, and the front door keeps swinging open for one more cousin.

We’ve spent more than six decades helping Miami Valley families protect the homes where these days happen, and that’s exactly what we’re most thankful for. So this year, instead of a card, we set a table.

Below, take a seat to read our thank-yous, then grab a few practical things for the holiday: a turkey thaw planner, the rules for frying outside, and a quick walk-around for after the guests go home.

Pass the thanks

Eight Seats, Eight Happy Thanksgiving Thank-Yous

Tap a place card to read what we’d say if we could go around the table with you. Everyone at this table has had a hand in the Thrush & Son story since 1960.

To Our homeowners:

More than 31,000 of you have trusted us since 1960 with your roofs, siding, windows, doors, and gutters. Every one of those projects began with an open front door. Thank you for letting us in, and Happy Thanksgiving to every one of your tables.

To Grandpa Wilbur:

He started Thrush & Son in 1960 with a simple idea: do the work right and treat every house like it belongs to family. Three generations later, we still measure ourselves against that idea.

To Dad:

W. Allen Thrush took what Grandpa built and grew it into the company we run today without losing the family feel. Thanks, Dad, for showing us how it’s done, and Happy Thanksgiving.

To Mom:

Mom is the reason our AI assistant is named Michelle. The real Michelle has kept this family fed, organized, and on time through more Thanksgivings than she’d want us to count. Happy Thanksgiving, Mom.

To Our crews:

They work through frosty mornings and early sunsets so more families have a warm, dry house before the holidays. Thank you for the care you bring to every job site, and for cleaning up like it’s your own driveway. Happy Thanksgiving, crew.

To Our office team:

Scheduling, permits, phone calls, follow-ups: they keep every project moving and every homeowner in the loop. Nothing happens without them, and they deserve the first slice of pie. Happy Thanksgiving, team.

To The Miami Valley:

From our Brookville headquarters to our offices in Troy and Lebanon, this is home. Thank you for the referrals, the Best of Dayton votes, and the waves from the driveway when our trucks pull up.

To BooBoo:

Our rescue pup has the warmest seat in the house and the worst table manners. If you haven’t met her yet, read BooBoo’s rescue story. She says Happy Thanksgiving, and she’d like your leftovers.

The busiest room in the house

The Kitchen Works Overtime on Thanksgiving

Here’s the one statistic worth knowing before you preheat. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home cooking fires. On Thanksgiving 2023, fire departments responded to about 1,446 of them, 388% of the daily average.

None of that should scare you out of hosting. It just means the kitchen deserves a little extra attention on the busiest cooking day of the year. A Happy Thanksgiving is the one where the only thing that smokes is the pie crust edge.

  1. Stay in the kitchen when anything is frying, boiling, or broiling. Set a timer if you step away for the turkey.
  2. Keep a lid within reach. Sliding a lid over a small pan fire and turning off the burner smothers it. Never throw water on grease.
  3. Clear the counters near the stove of towels, paper, and recipe cards, and keep kids and pets out of the cooking zone.

Turkey Thaw Planner

The USDA’s rule for thawing in the refrigerator is about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds. We planned on the slower end so you’re never carving a turkey that’s still icy in the middle. Pick your bird and see when it needs to leave the freezer.

3 days in the fridge. Move it from the freezer by Monday.
4 days in the fridge. Move it from the freezer by Sunday.
5 days in the fridge. Move it from the freezer by Saturday.
6 days in the fridge. Move it from the freezer by the Friday before.

Frying the Bird? Keep It Far From the House

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is blunt about turkey fryers: set the fryer up in an open area away from all walls, fences, and other structures, and never use it in, on, or under a garage, breezeway, carport, porch, or anything else that can catch fire. Thaw and dry the turkey completely first, because ice and water make hot oil boil over. Nothing ends a Happy Thanksgiving faster than a fryer fire against the garage.

Grills and fryers parked against the house also do quiet damage. Radiant heat can warp vinyl siding in one afternoon, and we see it every fall. If yours already has a wavy patch, our siding team can match and replace it.

After the guests go home

A Ten-Minute Walk-Around Before the Snow

A Happy Thanksgiving weekend is also the last calm stretch before winter, and the leaves are finally down. Grab a cup of coffee and some leftover pie, step outside, and look at your house the way a guest would. Pick a direction to start.

Look up: The roof

Stand at the curb and scan for shingles that are curled, cracked, or missing, and for flashing that’s lifted around the chimney. Fall storms loosen what summer heat already weakened, and winter is a rough time to find out. If something looks off, our roofing team can take a look before the snow.

Look along: The gutters

By late November most of the leaves are down, so this is the last good chance to clear the gutters before they freeze. Full gutters back water up under the shingles and set the stage for ice dams. Check that downspouts carry water away from the foundation, and read our ice dam prevention guide or see our gutter options.

Look in: Windows & doors

A full house tells you things. If the guests by the window kept their sweaters on, or the front door let in a blast every time it opened, write that down. Foggy glass is worth a look too; our window condensation guide explains what’s normal. When it’s time, see our replacement windows and entry doors.

Three Generations Around One Table

Wilbur Thrush started this company in Brookville in 1960. W. Allen Thrush made it his life’s work as the second generation, and Corey Thrush joined as the third. The family business grew, but the way we do it hasn’t changed much: show up when we say we will, explain things plainly, and treat every house like it’s at the end of our own street.

That’s why Happy Thanksgiving means more to us than a holiday greeting. A family company is built one handshake at a time, and the people who shook ours made this whole thing possible. Thank you.

Planning to host again next month? Our Christmas family gathering ideas pick up right where this table leaves off, and our Merry Christmas letter has tips for hanging lights without hurting your roof.

What we bring to the table

On the Menu Since 1960

Every family has its signature dishes. Ours just happen to be credentials. They’re the reason homeowners keep inviting us back, and the reason we can say Happy Thanksgiving to so many familiar faces each November. See the finished work in our project gallery.
