The door that opens a room to the outdoors
A new door changes how much light comes in, how easily you step outside, and how warm the room stays in January.
A patio door is the biggest opening in most houses, and the one that gets opened most. Thrush & Son installs Nobility Kalós vinyl doors in sliding, hinged and multi-panel styles for homes across Dayton and the Miami Valley, and we’ve been doing exterior work here since 1960.
Old sliders tend to fail the same ways: rollers that drag, a latch that won’t catch, a draft along the bottom, or a soft subfloor where water got under the sill. A new door fixes the first three. Fixing the fourth takes the right installation, which is why we pan and flash the opening before the new frame goes in.
Most homeowners notice the difference right away: a door that glides with one hand, no cold air at the threshold, and more daylight in the room. See our window and door page for everything else we install.

Three patio door styles, one for every opening
The right style depends on how much room there is on each side of the door.
-
Most commonSliding patio doors
One panel glides past a fixed one, so the door never swings into the room or onto the deck. The right choice where furniture or a grill sits close to the opening.
-
Classic lookHinged patio doors
Swing open like a front door, with a wide, clear opening when both sides are open. Often called French doors. They need clear floor space for the swing.
-
Widest openingMulti-panel doors
Three or four panels in one wide frame, for big openings to a deck or sunroom. More glass, more light, and a wider path outside.

Patio door installation that keeps water out
Most leaks and drafts at a sliding door start at the sill, not the glass.
Remove and inspect
The old door comes out and we check the subfloor and framing at the sill. Soft wood gets shown to you and repaired before anything new goes in.
Pan the sill
A sill pan goes under the threshold, so any water that gets past the door drains back outside instead of into the floor.
Set and flash
The frame is set level and plumb, and the sides and head are flashed into the wall so rain sheds around the opening.
Adjust and test
Rollers and locks are adjusted until the patio door glides and latches with one hand. Then we trim it out and clean up.

Rooms that open up with the right door
Where a new patio door makes the biggest difference in how a room feels.
-
Bedrooms
A sliding door onto a balcony brings morning light in without giving up wall space.
-
Living rooms
Tight-sealing glass keeps the room by the fireplace warm on the coldest nights.
-
Outdoor living
The door is where the house ends and the patio begins. Plan both together.

Patio door questions
Straight answers before you choose a style.
Sliding or hinged: which patio door is right for my home?
Sliding doors never swing, so they work where furniture, a grill or a deck railing sits close to the opening. Hinged doors give a wide, classic opening but need clear floor space for the swing. We look at the room and the deck before recommending one.
Will a new patio door stop the draft at the bottom?
Usually, yes. Most drafts come from worn weatherstripping or a sill that has settled. A new door fixes the first, and setting it level on a sill pan fixes the second.
What do U-factor and SHGC mean on a door label?
U-factor measures how easily heat passes through the whole door, and lower is better in winter. SHGC measures how much of the sun's heat comes through the glass, and lower keeps south- and west-facing rooms cooler in summer.
Should I choose dual-pane or triple-pane glass?
Both are available on Nobility Kalós doors. Triple-pane adds insulation and quiets outside noise, which helps on large doors in cold rooms. We'll compare the published ratings for both with you at the estimate.
Can you fix rot under my old sliding door?
Yes. We check the subfloor and framing when the old door comes out, show you anything soft, and repair it before the new door and sill pan go in.
Will a new patio door lower my energy bills?
It depends on the door you're replacing and the rest of the house. Most homeowners notice the comfort first: no cold air at the threshold and warmer glass in winter.
Do you install doors to match my windows?
Yes. Nobility Kalós doors are built on the same vinyl platform as the Nobility replacement windows we install, so frames and colors can match.
