Dayton Roofing Company Homeowners Have Trusted Since 1960

When Your Roof Needs the Best, Call Thrush & Son

Dayton roofing should feel simple: clear answers, clean workmanship, and a roof built to handle Ohio weather. That’s what Thrush & Son has delivered since 1960 — local crews who treat your home like their own, communicate clearly, and leave your property clean from the first inspection to the final walk-through.

Homeowners choose us because we focus on what actually protects your home. If you’re comparing contractors, you’ll feel the difference in our process — organized crews, honest guidance, and craftsmanship built to last.

Correct ventilation

Balanced attic airflow keeps your deck dry and stops shingles cooking from underneath. Skip it and the roof ages years early.

Dependable flashing

Valleys, chimneys, and wall lines detailed properly — because that’s where roofs actually leak, not in the middle of the field.

Precise shingle layout

Straight courses and the correct nailing pattern. This is the part your manufacturer warranty quietly depends on.

Care for your property

Landscaping protected, magnet-swept every evening, driveway clear when the crew leaves. Your routine keeps running.

Our installs are designed for long-term performance — built to resist wind, manage water properly, and hold their curb appeal for years. When product selection matters, our team helps you choose the right shingle style, color, and system components based on your home’s slope, ventilation needs, and the protection level you want.

Planning More Than a Roof?

Many homeowners bundle exterior upgrades to maximize protection and curb appeal in one smooth project.

For added peace of mind, you can review our standing with the Better Business Bureau. We stand behind our work and protect the reputation we’ve built across the Miami Valley, one roof at a time.

Roofing done right the first time

No excuses, no shortcuts, and no guessing about what your roof actually needs.

When you trust someone with your home, you don’t want excuses — you want a roofing company that shows up, pays attention, and finishes what it started. Our promise is simple: do the job right the first time, with clear communication and honest recommendations based on what your roof actually needs, not what’s easiest to sell.

That comes down to details most homeowners never see. Protecting your landscaping. Sweeping the drive before the crew leaves. The Six Layers of a Thrush & Son Roof

Click a number to see what each layer does

Cutaway diagram of the six-layer roof system Thrush & Son installs on Dayton, Ohio homes: leak barrier, deck protection, starter strip, architectural shingles, attic ventilation, and ridge cap shingles
1 Leak barrier Self-adhering ice and water membrane at eaves, valleys, chimneys, skylights and pipe boots, running no less than 24 inches past the warm wall. Without itAn ice dam pushes water backward under the shingles. You find out when it comes through the bedroom ceiling. Click any number on the roof to see that layer.
2 Deck protection Synthetic underlayment, cap-fastened at 9 inches on center, laid flat and unwrinkled, and shingled the same day it goes down. Without itFelt paper wrinkles, tears under boots, and holds moisture against your sheathing while the roof sits open. Click any number on the roof to see that layer.
3 Starter strip Purpose-made starter with factory adhesive along every eave and rake, 3/8 inch overhang, seams offset from the first course above. Without itCut-up field shingles used as starter. The first course has nothing sealing it down and it goes in the first big blow. Click any number on the roof to see that layer.
4 Architectural shingles Ultra-dimensional laminated shingles in straight courses, correct nailing pattern, joints staggered so no two line up. Without itThin three-tab lays flat, shows every deck imperfection, and lifts in the first straight-line wind. Click any number on the roof to see that layer.
5 Attic ventilation Balanced intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge, sized to your attic square footage rather than guessed at. Without itAttic heat cooks the shingles from underneath and the roof ages years early. In January, it builds the ice dam. Click any number on the roof to see that layer.
6 Ridge cap shingles Purpose-made ridge cap over every hip and ridge, not field shingles cut down to fit. Without itCut field shingles crack along the bend within a few winters, and the highest point on your roof is the first to leak. Click any number on the roof to see that layer.
The Honest Comparison

What Separates a Thrush & Son Roof

Most roofing quotes look the same on paper. The difference is in what you cannot see from the driveway — and in what happens after the crew leaves.

Thrush & Son®GAF President’s Club Contractor
The Alternative & Storm ChasersWhat we hear from homeowners
Credentials
A GAF President's Club Contractor, so we can offer GAF's strongest warranties, including Golden Pledge.
Basic licensing, or none you can verify. Limited manufacturer backing, so limited warranty coverage.
Materials
Ultra-dimensional architectural shingles over a complete six-layer system, every component specified to work together.
Mid-grade shingles. Components sourced separately, or left out to hit a number.
The installation
Straight courses, staggered joints, correct nailing pattern, metal at every edge, and the deck inspected after tear-off.
Shingles over whatever is already there, with the soft spots left where they are.
Storm performance
Built for Ohio weather — high wind resistance, hail durability, and a system detailed to survive freeze-thaw.
Meets basic code and nothing beyond it. Shortcuts on underlayment, nailing or ventilation raise the risk of leaks and blow-offs.
Warranty
Non-prorated coverage backed by the manufacturer, plus our own workmanship warranty in writing. Two companies standing behind one roof.
Limited coverage on materials. Workmanship handled verbally, if at all.
Your property
Landscaping tarped, job site magnet-swept every evening, driveway clear when the crew leaves.
One cleanup at the end of the job, if it happens at all.
Local reputation
Family owned in the Miami Valley since 1960. Three generations of work you can go and look at.
A short track record and inconsistent reviews — or an out-of-state truck that followed the last hail storm.
Financing
Multiple lending partners, transparent documentation, and someone here who walks you through it.
One option or none, and little help once the paperwork is signed.
After the job
A written price before any work begins, and the same phone number answering in five years.
A number on a yard sign that stops working once the check clears.

Get three quotes. Ask each one what goes under the shingles, in writing. Not every contractor will.

We put it on the page and invite the comparison. Three generations here have taught us the same thing every time: the homeowners who ask the hardest questions are the ones who call us back.

A Roof With Depth, Not Just Color

There’s a moment when the sun sets at just the right angle over your roof. It creates a touch of shadow that adds definition and depth, that takes your beautiful home and makes it breathtaking.

That is the difference an ultra-dimensional shingle makes. Dual shadow lines give the roof real depth instead of a flat wash of color, and we install it on homes across the Miami Valley because that depth reads from the street, not just up close.

Questions Dayton homeowners actually ask us

The questions that come up on the driveway, answered the way we answer them in person.

01

Your new roof

Repair or replace, timing, and what to expect.

Do I need a full replacement, or can this roof be repaired?

Often it can be repaired, and we will tell you so. Lifted shingles, a failed pipe boot or a flashing detail at a chimney are repairs, not replacements.

A replacement is the right call when the shingles have lost their granules across the field, when the deck has soft spots, or when you are chasing the third leak in two years. We show you photographs of what we find and let you decide.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most average Dayton homes are torn off and re-roofed in one to three days. Steeper pitches, cut-up roofs with several valleys, or multiple existing layers add time.

We do not start a roof we cannot finish before the weather turns. If a storm is coming, we dry it in properly rather than leaving it open overnight.

How long should my new roof last?

Basic three-tab shingles tend to give you around twenty years. Architectural shingles commonly reach twenty-five to thirty years or more in Ohio conditions.

The variable is rarely the shingle. It is ventilation, installation quality, and whether the deck was sound when the roof went on.

Do I need to be home while you work?

No. Plenty of our customers are at work while the roof goes on.

We need driveway access for the dump trailer and material, and we will ask you to move vehicles and anything fragile off the deck or patio. Landscaping gets tarped, the site is magnet-swept every evening, and the driveway is clear when the crew leaves.

02

Warranty & weather

What is covered, and how it holds up in Ohio.

What does the warranty actually cover?

Two things, from two places. The manufacturer covers the shingles and system components against defects, non-prorated, when the full system is installed by a certified contractor.

We cover the workmanship in writing. If something fails, you are not standing between two companies pointing at each other.

What is not covered?

Worth knowing before you sign with anyone. Manufacturer warranties generally exclude improper installation, inadequate attic ventilation, lack of maintenance, and damage unrelated to a product defect.

Mixing non-matching components is the one that catches people out. A warranty written for a complete system usually does not apply when half the system came from somewhere else.

Will it hold up to Ohio wind and hail?

Architectural shingles perform well in high wind when the nailing pattern is correct and the starter strip is real starter, not cut-down field shingles. Most blow-offs we inspect are installation failures, not product failures.

Hail is different. No asphalt shingle is hail-proof. What a good system does is keep a hail event from becoming a leak while your claim is processed.

Why do some roofs get black streaks?

That is algae, and it shows up on the north slope first because it stays shaded and damp. Cosmetic, but it ages a house from the street.

Shingles with built-in algae resistance prevent most of it. Clear gutters, better attic ventilation, and trimming branches that shade the roof handle the rest.
