America’s best-selling shingle, installed the right way
Timberline HDZ is GAF’s #1-selling shingle, and it’s the roof we install most on Miami Valley homes. It pairs the deep, dimensional look of a high-definition architectural shingle with three technologies that make the whole roof tougher: LayerLock™, StainGuard Plus™ and WindProven™ coverage.
Thrush & Son has roofed Dayton-area homes since 1960. We install HDZ as a complete GAF system, from the starter strip to the ridge cap, so every warranty it qualifies for actually applies. For most homes, it hits the sweet spot between price, curb appeal and protection, which is why it’s the shingle we recommend first.
- 99.9%nailing accuracy with the StrikeZone™ area
- Class Afire rating (UL 790)
- Class 3impact rating (UL 2218)
- 25-yearStainGuard Plus™ algae warranty
- No maxwind speed with WindProven™
Four reasons Timberline outperforms an ordinary shingle
Each one is a GAF technology you can see on the roof or read in the warranty.
Plenty of shingles look good on day one. What separates this one is how it’s built and how it’s backed: a stronger nailing area, algae protection that lasts, and wind coverage you can actually read in writing.

LayerLock™ technology
A mechanical fusion between the shingle layers creates the StrikeZone™ nailing area, the widest GAF has ever made. GAF rates it at up to 99.9% nailing accuracy, which means fewer misplaced nails and a stronger hold.

WindProven™ limited wind warranty
Install HDZ with GAF starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap shingles, and leak barrier or attic ventilation, and the roof qualifies for a 15-year WindProven limited wind warranty with no maximum wind speed.

StainGuard Plus™ algae protection
Those black streaks on Ohio roofs are algae. StainGuard Plus granules fight it over time, backed by a 25-year limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration.

A complete GAF roofing system
Shingles are only the top layer. We pair HDZ with matching GAF underlayment, leak barrier, starter strips, ridge caps and ventilation, so the whole roof works together.

Most homes land on HDZ. Here’s when another GAF shingle makes more sense.
There’s no single best shingle for every house. The right pick depends on how much hail your neighborhood sees, how much of the roof shows from the street and how long you plan to stay. We’ll talk through all three at your estimate.

Questions homeowners ask about HDZ shingles
Straight answers from the crew that installs it.
What is Timberline HDZ?
It's an architectural shingle from GAF and the company's best-selling shingle. It combines a high-definition, dimensional look with LayerLock technology, StainGuard Plus algae protection and eligibility for GAF's WindProven limited wind warranty.
What does LayerLock technology do?
LayerLock mechanically bonds the shingle layers together and creates the StrikeZone nailing area. GAF rates it at up to 99.9% nailing accuracy, which helps every shingle hold the way it's designed to.
What is the WindProven warranty?
It's a 15-year GAF limited wind warranty with no maximum wind speed. To qualify, the shingles must be installed with GAF starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap shingles, and leak barrier or attic ventilation.
Will HDZ stop black streaks on my roof?
Those streaks are usually algae. StainGuard Plus granules are designed to resist it, and GAF backs them with a 25-year limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration.
What colors does HDZ come in?
It comes in GAF's High Definition colors plus the newer Bold Definition collection, which includes Chestnut Valley, Cliffside, Midnight Mesa and Sierra Sand. We bring real samples to your estimate.
Is HDZ good for hail?
It carries a Class 3 impact rating. If your home sees frequent hail, ask us about AS II, which is designed for higher impact resistance.
