Home Remodeling Checklist

Five things to do before the crew arrives

A little prep makes a roofing or siding project calmer, safer and faster.

A good home remodeling checklist is the difference between a project you enjoy and one you just survive. Thrush & Son has prepared Miami Valley homeowners for roofing and siding work since 1960, and the smoothest jobs nearly always start the same way: a little planning the week before.

New siding or a new roof is exciting. You’ve picked the color, pictured the finished house and set the date. What’s easy to forget is everything in between: the crew, the trailer, the dumpster and the noise. A few small oversights can turn into avoidable headaches.

This home remodeling checklist keeps it simple. It isn’t more work. It’s five quick steps that protect your home, your yard and your peace of mind from the first day to the last.

  • 5 stepsMost take less than an hour.
  • Start a week outNo last-minute scramble.

Why It Matters

The finish gets the attention. The process sets the tone.

Most homeowners focus on the “after.” The days in between matter just as much.

It’s natural to picture the new color and the curb appeal. But for a few days, your home is also a job site. Without a home remodeling checklist, small things like a car in the driveway or a mirror on the wrong wall can slow the work or end up damaged.

The National Association of Home Builders points to planning as a key part of a successful remodel, and we see it on every job. The homeowners who take an hour or two to prepare have smoother projects and better results. The three reasons below are why a home remodeling checklist pays off.

  • Crews need room

Ladders, scaffolding and material piles take up space around the whole house, not just one wall.

  • Equipment needs access

A dumpster and a delivery truck need a clear driveway and a safe path to set down and pull out.

  • The house will shake

Tear-off and nailing send vibration through the walls, enough to shift frames, shelves and mirrors.

The Checklist

Your home remodeling checklist in five steps

Work through this home remodeling checklist the week before your start date.

  1. Take down wall hangings and fragile items

Roofing and siding work sends vibration through the walls, enough to loosen pictures, mirrors and shelf decor. Remove or secure anything hanging on exterior walls and in rooms near the work.

TipStart with the rooms under the roof edge and along the sides getting new siding.

  2. Mark and photograph your landscaping

Flag the flowers, shrubs and garden beds you care about most and tell your project manager before work starts. Then take photos of the yard and beds.

TipPhotos give everyone a clear reference so things can be put back the way you like them.

  3. Clear the driveway, garage and access points

If your project includes a dumpster or a material delivery, move vehicles out of the driveway and garage the night before. Trailers and dumpsters need room to set down and pull out safely.

TipPark on the street or a neighbor’s drive for the first day, when deliveries arrive.

  4. Move outdoor decor, furniture and grills

Patio furniture, grills, planters and lawn ornaments sit right in the work zone. Move them well away from the house so they stay clean and out of the crew’s path.

TipA garage, shed or the far side of the yard works fine.

  5. Set expectations and know the plan

Ask about start times, daily schedules, which doors stay usable, where the dumpster goes and how cleanup works. Knowing what to expect removes the guesswork.

Checklist FAQ

Quick answers before day one

What homeowners ask us most while they prepare.

When should I start my home remodeling checklist?

About a week before your start date. That leaves time to take down wall hangings, mark your landscaping and plan where vehicles will go, without a last-minute rush.

Do I need to be home during a roofing or siding project?

Not the whole time. We recommend being there for the first-day walk-through and the final walk-through, so you can point out concerns and sign off on the finished work.

Will the work damage my landscaping?

Crews work carefully around plants, but materials and debris come off the house. Marking and photographing the beds you care about helps everyone protect them.

Where does the dumpster go?

Usually in the driveway, as close to the work as is practical. We confirm the spot with you before delivery so it doesn't block anything you need.

Is a home remodeling checklist different for roofing and siding?

The basics are the same. Roofing adds more vibration and debris from above, so wall hangings matter more. Siding puts the crew right along your walls, so clearing landscaping and decor next to the house matters most.

Who handles cleanup?

We do. Debris is cleared daily, and the yard gets a magnetic sweep for nails at the end of the project.
