Cedar has one flaw. It's made of wood.
Real cedar is beautiful for about six years. Then it wants scraping, priming and two coats, and it wants them again in 2032.
Engineered siding solves that without asking you to give up the look. It is manufactured from treated wood strands and fibers bonded with resins, then finished with modern primers, so you get real depth and real grain on a board that does not split, cup or feed anything.
This is not a new idea. Composite and hardboard products have been on American homes since the 1920s, and the category has been refined steadily since. What changed is the binders and the coatings. Today's engineered siding is produced under published industry standards, including technical guidance from APA, the Engineered Wood Association.
In the Miami Valley, that stability matters more than it does almost anywhere else. Our winters cross the freezing line repeatedly rather than staying below it, and every crossing is a cycle of expansion and contraction. Solid wood fights that. Engineered board is built for it.
Thrush & Son® has worked across Dayton and the Miami Valley since 1960, three generations in. Weighing options? Compare vinyl siding, insulated vinyl and stone cladding.
Same look from the street. Different life.
Cedar is gorgeous. This is what owning it actually involves, next to the engineered alternative.
Three ways to get the handmade look
Shakes, scallops and steel. Each one solves a different problem, and each one gets specified to the house rather than to the truck.
Northwoods® Shingles & Shakes
Four cedar reproductions, designed so no two pieces on a wall look stamped from the same mold. Gables, dormers and accent walls are where this earns its money.

Engineered siding questions, answered straight
What it is made of, how long it lasts, and where it beats the alternatives.
What is engineered siding actually made of?
Treated wood strands or fibers, bonded with resins and finished with protective primers and coatings. It is a real wood product, engineered so the weaknesses of solid lumber are designed out of it.
That is the difference from vinyl, which is a plastic pretending to be wood. Engineered siding is wood, just wood that has been improved.
Does it really look like real cedar?
From the street, yes, and much closer up than most people expect. The shake and scallop profiles are molded from actual cedar pieces, so the grain and the irregularity are real rather than repeated.
The honest caveat: a carpenter standing at the wall will know. A neighbor across the street will not.
How long does engineered siding last in Ohio?
Decades, when it is installed correctly. Service life comes down to moisture management at the transitions, correct fastening, and following the manufacturer's finishing requirements.
The Miami Valley's freeze-thaw cycling is harder on siding than a straight cold winter, and engineered board handles that cycling far better than solid wood does.
Will I ever have to paint it?
Not on the schedule real wood demands. Factory-applied primers and finishes are engineered to hold color far longer than a field-applied coat, and there is no scraping cycle.
If you repaint eventually, it is because you want a different color, not because the siding is failing.
How does it compare to vinyl?
Engineered siding costs more and looks better. It has real depth, takes a shadow line properly, and reads as a material rather than a covering.
Vinyl wins on price and on never needing paint at all. Plenty of Miami Valley homes get the right answer by using both: vinyl on the main elevations, engineered shakes on the gables and entry.
Can it go on any style of house?
Most of them. The range covers lap, shake, scallop and board and batten, in a wide set of colors and textures, so it suits a Victorian, a ranch or a modern farmhouse.
Where it shines is on houses that already have wood detailing worth matching.
What is the warranty?
A limited manufacturer warranty on the product, with terms that depend on the line and the profile you select. We put the actual document in front of you rather than summarizing it.
Our workmanship warranty is separate, and also in writing.
