Good contractors welcome the hard questions
So we wrote our answers down, before you ever have to ask.
Most homeowners replace a roof once or twice in a lifetime. The contractor across the kitchen table has done it thousands of times — which is exactly why your questions matter. How a warranty really works, what ventilation has to do with it, what a fair timeline looks like: the answers tell you more about a roofer than any sales pitch.
Thrush & Son® has worked across Dayton and the Miami Valley since 1960. Three generations in, the questions have not changed much, and neither have our answers. If the honest answer is a repair instead of a replacement, we will say so. If what we find does not look like storm damage, you will hear that before anything gets filed.
Start with whatever is on your mind below. If your question is not here, call (937) 833-5136 and ask a real person.
Shingle roofing FAQs
Warranties, lifespan and what a replacement involves.
What warranty comes with an asphalt shingle roof?
Two warranties, from two places. The manufacturer covers the shingles against defects. Most architectural shingles carry a lifetime limited warranty, and the strongest coverage applies when the whole roof is installed as a complete manufacturer system by a certified contractor.
We cover the workmanship in writing. We will walk you through both documents before you sign, so you know exactly who stands behind what.
What do shingle warranties usually exclude?
Improper installation, inadequate attic ventilation, lack of maintenance, and mixing in components from other manufacturers are the common ones. Storm damage like hail or a falling tree is generally a homeowners insurance matter, not a warranty claim.
Ventilation is the one that catches people out. A roof installed over a poorly vented attic can void coverage, which is why we check it on every estimate.
Why do you install complete roofing systems?
Because the warranty follows the system. Shingles, underlayment, starter, ridge cap and ventilation from one manufacturer are tested together and covered together. Mix brands and the coverage usually shrinks to the shingle alone.
As a President’s Club contractor, we can offer enhanced manufacturer system warranties, including coverage that extends beyond the materials.
What makes a premium architectural shingle worth it?
A thicker, more dimensional look than standard architectural shingles, with a deeper shadow line that reads well from the street. Premium lines also tend to have a wider, reinforced nailing area, which helps crews nail them right.
Installed with the manufacturer’s matching accessories, many premium shingles qualify for enhanced wind warranties. We will show you the terms on paper.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most average Dayton homes are torn off and re-roofed in one to three days. Steep pitches, cut-up roofs with several valleys, or multiple existing layers add time.
We do not start a roof we cannot finish before the weather turns. If a storm is coming, we dry it in properly rather than leave it open.
How long should a new shingle roof last?
Architectural shingles commonly reach twenty-five to thirty years or more in Ohio conditions. Basic three-tab shingles tend to give around twenty.
The variable is rarely the shingle. It is ventilation, installation quality, and whether the deck was sound when the roof went on.
Will shingles hold up to Ohio wind?
Yes, when the nailing pattern is correct and the starter strip is real starter, not cut-down field shingles. Most blow-offs we inspect are installation failures, not product failures.
What causes black streaks, and how do I prevent them?
That is algae, and it shows up on the north slope first because it stays shaded and damp. It is cosmetic, but it ages a house from the street.
Shingles with algae-resistant granules prevent most of it. Good attic ventilation and trimming branches that shade the roof handle the rest.
Metal roofing FAQs
How metal compares, and what it costs you over time.
How does metal compare to asphalt shingles?
Metal costs more up front and lasts considerably longer, often forty years or more. It sheds snow and rain quickly and holds up well to wind.
Shingles cost less today and are easier to repair. The right answer depends on how long you plan to stay and what the roof needs to look like on your house.
What warranties come with a metal roof?
Usually two from the manufacturer: one on the panel itself and one on the paint finish against fading, chalking and peeling. Terms vary by product line, so we put the actual warranty for your system in front of you, not a range.
How does metal handle hail?
Metal resists being punctured far better than shingles, so hail is much less likely to cause a leak. Large hail can still leave cosmetic dents, depending on the panel gauge and profile.
Is a metal roof loud in the rain?
Not on a house. Installed over solid decking and underlayment, a residential metal roof is only slightly louder than shingles. The loud tin roof people picture is metal over open framing, like a barn.
Storm damage & insurance FAQs
What is covered, when to call, and how claims work.
What does homeowners insurance usually cover?
Most policies cover sudden damage: wind, hail, lightning, and falling trees or limbs. They generally do not cover wear, age, or a roof that simply reached the end of its life.
Your policy language decides, not us. If you are unsure, your agent can tell you what your coverage includes.
When should I call about storm damage?
As soon as it is safe. Many policies require prompt notice and filing deadlines vary, so check yours.
We will inspect first and show you photos of what we find. If it does not look like storm damage, we will tell you before anything gets filed.
Can I make repairs before the adjuster comes?
Temporary repairs to prevent more damage, yes, like tarping an opening. Photograph everything first and keep your receipts. Hold off on permanent repairs until the adjuster has seen it.
Will you meet with my adjuster?
Yes. We can be on the roof with your adjuster to point out what we found. The claim itself is between you and your insurance company, and coverage decisions are theirs.
Do you waive or cover insurance deductibles?
No. Your deductible is your share of the claim under your policy, and we do not absorb it, rebate it, or build it into the price. Our promotions also exclude insurance deductibles.
How long does the claim process take?
It varies with your insurer and how many claims a storm produced. Several weeks is common. We schedule your install as soon as the claim is approved and your materials are in.
Siding & trim FAQs
Vinyl versus engineered, lifespan, and what trim does.
What are the advantages of vinyl siding?
It never needs painting, cleans with a garden hose, and costs less than most alternatives. Insulated vinyl adds a foam backing that stiffens the panel and helps with energy efficiency.
Vinyl or engineered wood siding?
Engineered wood looks and feels more like real wood and takes paint in any color. It will need repainting over the years. Vinyl costs less and needs almost no upkeep.
We install both, so we will recommend whichever fits your house and your budget.
How long does vinyl siding last?
Commonly twenty to forty years when it is installed correctly. The most common failure we see is siding nailed too tight, which does not leave room for the panels to expand and contract with Ohio temperatures.
Can vinyl siding be painted?
It can, with a vinyl-safe paint in a color no darker than the original. Darker colors absorb heat and can warp the panels, and painting may affect the manufacturer’s warranty. Check the warranty first.
What does exterior trim actually do?
It seals the edges where siding meets windows, doors and corners, keeping water out of the wall. It also frames the house, which is why trim color does so much for curb appeal.
Gutter & fascia FAQs
Seamless systems, materials and maintenance.
Why would fascia need replacing?
Fascia is the board your gutters hang on. When water gets behind it, the wood rots, the gutters pull loose, and water starts reaching the roof deck and walls. Soft or stained fascia is worth fixing before it spreads.
What are the most durable materials?
Aluminum for gutters, and aluminum or PVC wrap for fascia and trim. Neither rots, and both hold their finish for years.
Are seamless gutters worth it?
Yes. Seams are where gutters leak. Seamless gutters are formed on site to the exact length of each run, so the only joints are at corners and downspouts.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least twice a year, in late spring and after the leaves drop. More often if trees overhang the roof. Gutter guards cut that down to an occasional check.
Financing FAQs
How payment options work, and what to ask first.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, through third-party lenders for qualifying homeowners. Plans and terms change, so we go over the current options at your estimate rather than quote them here.
Do I need good credit?
Approval and rates are set by the lender, based on your credit and other factors. We will never tell you that you are approved before the lender does.
Are promotional or 0% plans available?
Lenders sometimes run promotional plans, and we will tell you what is available when you ask. Read the terms closely: on deferred-interest plans, interest can be charged back to the start if the balance is not paid off within the promotional period.
How fast is approval?
Many applications get a decision quickly, sometimes during the appointment. The timing is the lender’s, not ours.
